THE RIGHT CLOTHES TO PACK...
As the old saying goes, “there’s no such thing as the wrong weather- only the wrong clothes.” And Manchester-based “outdoor attire specialist” Lissom & Muster is the place to find the right outdoor wear.
“It all started with a search for a pair of beautifully made, English riding boots,” says Lissom & Muster’s owner John Rogers. “When I bought a good suit I looked for durable, good looking fabrics, classic styling and a tailor who understood what the garment would need to do. But it’s much harder to find outdoor products made with that sort of ethos these days,” he adds. “I didn’t want a new pair of riding boots, wellingtons or a new outdoor coat every season, I wanted to find whatever was best and would last – perhaps even get better with age.”
Open since November 2012, the shop stocks Shetland wool knits, British tweeds, Northamptonshire leather boots and waxed Lancashire cotton coats, alongside contemporary classics selected from the very best, skilled makers from Britain and Europe.
“These are not simply icons of heritage fashion, but refined technologies, fit for their purpose,” says John. And new fabrics, technologies and techniques are just as much a part of Lissom & Muster’s ethos as their traditional counterparts.
“Knowledge is vital,” states John. “Before I have an item made for me or stock an item in the shop I need to understand how it will perform in use and over time. For example, we choose different leathers for bags than we do for footwear because of their different properties. And Cumbrian Herdwick wool and Shetland wool are very different.”
"...a large percentage of the items sold to customers are unique to Lissom & Muster..."
John spends considerable time working with manufacturers and producers to make many items that are only available in the shop. Indeed, a large percentage of the items sold to customers are unique to Lissom & Muster- including bags and leather goods, gloves, knitwear, socks, boot care products and brushes, ties, field blankets and pocket squares
“The shop is for people who want the best and enjoy products that get better with age,” adds John. “I like the idea of having a pair of shoes for many years that will give you memories of where you’ve walked in them. We sell things that become part of one’s life.”
WHAT TO PACK FOR A TRIP TO SWITZERLAND:
John recommends the perfect Lissom & Muster shopping list for Swiss mountains, snowy treks and lakeside hikes.
“Many of our items are perfect for Swiss conditions. At this time of year Switzerland is, on the whole, dry and cold rather than wet and boggy so you wouldn’t take the same clothes that you would take to the Lake District. Our thermal wear, for example, is Swedish - a very similar climate.
Merino wool is ideal for the Swiss winter alpine climate – durable and warm, but soft and comfortable next to the skin. Cotton will make you clammy whereas wool will shift moisture away.
You will need to keep wind out but not trap moisture in. This is why a tightly-woven cotton or ventile jacket, for example, with wool underneath can often be more comfortable for a trip than a high tech Gore-Tex coat. Make sure you can adjust your clothing at the neck and wrists to allow ventilation when if get too hot.
I am very keen on our Hiking boots (http://www.lissomandmuster.com/439/products/andechs-hiking-boot--russia-leather--by-trabert.aspx). They are from Bavaria and made of Russia leather - tanned with poplar and willow bark and proofed with birch tar. It ages beautifully and – if cared for well - is a match for any contemporary synthetic materials.
A Shetland wool blanket will keep you warm in a cold climate - Tucked across your legs, wrapped around you, or draped on a bed, it will offer warmth and comfort wherever you are.
