The journey from Llandudno Junction up to Blaenau Ffestiniog can be breathtakingly beautiful, as you pass through the local Snowdonian stations. And when you've reached Blaenau you connect with the charming Ffestiniog steam railway for the journey down to Minffordd, close to Portmeirion village.

Take the 10.10 train from Euston on Friday morning to Chester with Virgin trains, arriving at 12.12 (2hrs 2mins). Change at Chester for the Arriva train to Llandudno Junction, departing 12.23 and arriving at 13.11 (48mins). Then, join the Arriva train to Blaenau Ffestiniog, departing at 13.30 and arriving at 14.32 1hr 2 mins). Finally board the 15.10 Ffestiniog Railway steam train at 15.10 which pulls into Minffordd at 16.10, where you will be met by staff from the Portmeirion village (call ahead on 01766 770000). Depart from Manchester Piccadilly at 10.50 on an Arriva service, arriving at 12.48 in Llandudno Jct (1hr58mins) where you will connect with the same service to Blaenau as those travelling from London.
The journey from Llandudno Junction to Blaenau passes through delightful small stations that are often dressed in colourful flowers. The surrounding landscape of Snowdonia is also very beautiful. It might be nice to bring a picnic for the journey.

Portmeirion is not only a magical place itself, the village is also brilliantly situated to allow you to explore the surrounding countryside, towns and villages. You can take a trip on the West Highland steam railway up to Carnarfon to see the magnificent castle and pretty harbour, or you could travel into Snowdonia. The return from Portmeirion to London or Manchester follows the same route as the inward journey. For both destinations you begin by departing from Minffordd at 10.25, arriving at Blaenau at 11.30. Then the Arriva mainline service leaves Blaenau at 11.46, arriving at Llandudno Junction at 12.44.
Depart from Llandudno Junction at 12.53, arrving Chester at 13.49. The final leg of the route leaves Chester, by Virgin trains, at 14.35 and arrives in Euston at 16.28.
Depart from Llandudno Junction at 12.53 and arrive back at Piccadilly at 14.57.
