Enjoy the romance, charm and fun of the French capital -in just three days you can enjoy the very best of Paris
A thousand and one books have surely been written about travellers journeying from London to Paris- but the trip never becomes less enticing or romantic. There is guaranteed delight in three days exploring the French capital, and travelling by train means the journey becomes part of the pleasure. There will be time for plenty of sightseeing- the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, The Louvre and the Pompidou Centre are the big game of Paris and always rewarding- but Paris is also a city that’s perfect for
wandering- find boutiques in the Latin Quarter, stroll the banks of the
Seine, or take the Metro to the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt, (the
station name that’s most delightful to say out loud).
Go from the champagne bar of St Pancras to the heart of Paris in under three hours.
Check-in at The Eurostar terminal is smooth and simple, with e-ticket machines and a brisk security scan. Queues are usually short, though there may be a slight delay at rush-hour and weekends.
Check-in is open until 30 minutes before departure, and once checked in, there is a large passenger lounge with wifi and plug sockets, shops and cafes including WH Smith and Costa Coffee and comfortable seating, with a travelator which delivers passengers directly to the platform, and makes it easy to manoeuvre luggage. There’s also a lift if you prefer.
There is a buffet car on board the train, and an optional executive upgrade means food service at your table, a quieter carriage, more spacious seats and a plug socket and free wifi.
The Eurostar sets off from the beautifully refurbished St Pancras station, speeds through the countryside and takes just twenty minutes to dash through the Channel Tunnel and emerge in France. The journey is deceptively fast- the comfortable train rockets trough Kent, beneath the channel and emerges in France in the time it takes to queue at an airport.
The train arrives at the Gare du Nord in Paris after two hours and fifteen minutes.
Leave in the afternoon and the Eurostar will pull into the Gare Du Nord two hours and fifteen minutes later, in time for cocktail hour.
Days 1 - 3
Spend the next morning sightseeing- go to the top of the Eiffel Tower or take the Metro to Sacre Coeur, wander round Montmartre and absorb the glorious views of Paris. Have lunch at the stylish Nanashi in the Marias, the old Jewish quarter, now crammed with boutiques and stylish cafes, before wandering down to the Ile de la Cite, for a look at Notre Dame.
In the evening, celebrate being in Paris by dining at the romantic Brasserie Bofinger, before a midnight stroll (or cab) back to your hotel.
On Sunday morning take the Metro to the huge broquante at Porte de Clignancourt- no baggage allowance means you can buy as much vinyl, vintage clothing and antique crockery as your luggage can hold. There are several authentically 1930s style brasseries in the area for a steak frites and red wine lunch, before an afternoon of Art- the Louvre can be overwhelming, but the Musee D’orsay is the perfect size.
