The heart of Zurich’s old town, the gentle hill of Lindenhof offers a small park at the top, old men playing chess, and lovers sitting on the old city wall, looking across at the city and the river spread beneath. A Roman fort was discovered here, but nowadays, it provides a lovely spot for a picnic lunch or a stroll.
The old town itself, Niederdorft, is a magnet for younger people, and Zurich’s many students, with pavement cafes, interesting bars, quiet tree-shaded squares, and beautiful old alleyways of tall, shuttered houses above antique and flower shops. A wander round the old town leads seamlessly into a walk by the lake; a particularly pleasant destination in Summer.
The promenade stretches for three kilometres along the shimmering Lake Zurich- energetic types can hire pedalos, boats or go swimming in the astonishingly clear water- or it’s equally lovely to simply stroll and enjoy the view, flanked by swans.
