The Red Room is a Rococo velvet delight, in Zurich’s oldest bakery. The café extends over three floors, with a charming, old fashioned atmosphere and wonderful cakes as decorative and delightful as Spring wedding hats.
There’s friendly service (though the waiters do have a lot of stairs to run up and down), and a good café menu of snacks to supplement the confections. The hot chocolate is justifiably famous, and the shop area has a long glass counter filled with cakes and hand-made chocolates, where those who can’t make their minds up can survey all the options.
In Winter, enjoy the chandeliers, the gilt mirrors and the festive decorations, and in summer, there is a large, attractive seating area outside. But be warned, it’s down a small street, and can be hard to find- so look out for the steps and red awnings that read “Conditorei”.
