This is the closest it's possible to get to living in Vienna, without moving there. Three young Viennese architects are turning empty shops into hotel rooms, aiming to create 'horizontal hotels'- where for a small extra cost, breakfast is in the charming Goldenegge Cafe down the road, and the spa is a Turkish bath ten minutes walk away. Each room, protected from the street by a steel door, is designed to reflect the space's previous use- the first to launch is in an ex-tailor's shop, with walls padded in Toile de Jouy cotton. The fridge is full of complimentary drinks and chocolate, an imac is primed with music, and there is a selection of indie DVDs and a Nespresso machine alongside the huge bed. Cheaper than a hotel, and far more fun, this is the best way imaginable to see the funky side of the city.
