The Opera House

Swarming with ticket sellers dressed uncomfortably in frock coats and powdered wigs, the Viennese Opera was built in 1869, and its eclectic architectural style was initially ridiculed as a 'digesting elephant.' But after one architect died from a botched operation and the other committed suicide as a result of the criticism, Emperor Franz Josef dared only to comment, 'it was very nice, it pleased me.' Now, the building with its formal archways, gilt and red carpets, still attracts great singers and conductors to its kitsch, dramatic spaces resonant with past and present music.
