The Hofburg Palace

The Hofburg Palace is a lavish, baroque hymn to Imperial majesty, clearly built with no notion that the Habsburg empire could be finite. It is now the official seat of the Austrian President, but several areas are open to visitors, including its impressive art collections, and the gilded, Rococo apartments of Emperor Franz Josef. Part of the same vast complex, the Imperial Palace houses the Spanish Riding School where you can see 'morning training,' with the white Lippizaner horses as enchanting as unicorns, executing their perfect steps. From here it's a short walk to the beautiful Michaelerplatz, where classical musicians busk outside the shining white church, and horse-drawn carriages rattle under the Imperial arches.
