It is indeed grand, in the secure, old-Europe sense that suggests a snowy walk followed by sachertorte in the candlelit salon, or an evening of waltzing to the plaintive call of the violins, before subsiding into the starched sheets of your vast, carved bed.
This great hotel is like an enormous liner, sailing blithely through Viennese history, carrying the best bits and picking up modern necessities, like flat screen TVs, wifi and heated mirrors along the way. Rooms are furnished with Belle Epoque antiques, the bathrooms gleam with marble, and it's all vaguely reminiscent of being a European aristocrat in a Henry James novel.
