Right in the centre of Lyon, this elegant hotel is a remarkably successful blending of grand old rooms and Toile de Jouy fabrics with swathes of scarlet, and outbreaks of edginess. Sometimes, this sort of thing can be disastrous- here, it looks and feels exactly right. The grand, Parisian style building with its dramatic Renaissance dome, stands sentinel on Place Bellecour, lit up like an ocean liner pulling into port.
The refurbishment hasn’t detracted from the sense of 19th century graciousness that pervades the salons, and bedrooms are comforting and comfortable, with little Louis armchairs and patterned drapes. Some are not huge- but there is the option of the Rotonde Royale suite in the dome, a circular room with views over the Saone. The hotel also has a garage service, a restaurant, Cote Cuisine, serving regional dishes, and a bar with windows that overlook Place Bellecour- a joy for people-watching.
