Welcome to Laon

Guide to Laon, France
A Delightful Medieval Town

The holy French town of Laon rises one hundred metres from the flat Picardy plain and there's been a settlement here since before Roman times. Its old town has a number of medieval buildings, including a cathedral and so it's a delightful place to stop for lunch a wander to escape the autoroute. You can spot the cathedral sitting proudly on the plateau from quite a distance away.

There are plenty of places to eat in the old town such as the creperie Agora and Le Peche Mignon.

The town has the only fully automated municipal cable car system in the world, which links the upper town (the historical centre, located on a plateau) with the lower town. It has three stations and runs on rubber tyres.
