Kreuzberg

Most popular with Berlin's immigrant, gay, and counter-cultural communities, and also known, inexplicably trendily, as X-berg, Kreuzberg is ideal for wandering. Bergmanstrasse is a jumble of restaurants, bars, music and boutiques- and particularly good for vintage shopping. At Colours Kleidermarkt, you can buy clothes by weight, (Bergmannstrasse 102, www.kleidermarkt.de) and the antique shops spill onto the pavement with racks of fur coats, stuffed bears and carved chairs. If you carry on up Bergstrasse, there is an exceptionally beautiful cemetery, rippling with birdsong, which leads to the green spaces of Volkspark Hasenheide. Allow an afternoon to explore.
