Hotel de Rome

Set just off Unter den Linden, this large hotel opened six years ago in a grand, classical 19th century building, which was previously a bank. Owned by Rocco Forte, the interior has been sympathetically modernised alongside the glory of its lofty ceilings, marble and mosaics. The rooms glow with deep colour and polished wood, and many of the suites have the original panelling and elegant terraces which overlook Bebelplatz. Most reassuringly, there are bathtubs supplementing the usual Germanic glass-walled shower- for Brits, sleek design is no compensation for lack of privacy. The Opera Court, with gilt edges and deco skylights, offers afternoon tea, and there is a spa, with a swimming pool in what used to be the bank vault- fill in your own joke about liquid assets.
